The Purpose of Nomads

The purpose of Nomads, a golfing club started back in 1960 in South Africa, is to:

  1. Enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people through the medium of golf;
  2. Through the enjoyment of golf, to raise funds to assist those less fortunate than ourselves;
  3. To raise funds in order to foster and encourage junior golf; and
  4. To belong to an International golfing club and enjoy in the near future playing against our overseas club mates.

Nomads South Africa - Some History

Nomads started back in 1960 with a small core of businessmen enjoying each other’s company on a golf course. The SA Nomads as an organisation has donated some R10 Million to various charitable organisations over the 43 years of its existence. Nomads boasts a membership of over 3200 members belonging to 12 clubs in SA, 3 clubs in Zimbabwe, 1 club in Botswana, and the latest club in Auckland, New Zealand.

Nomads have an excellent reputation in the SA golfing community as being a superbly organised and well-run club. The local golf clubs all enjoy hosting the Nomads because of their discipline and dress codes as well as the manner in which the members conduct themselves both on and off the golf course. The hosting golf club’s coffers also swell somewhat by the amount of beverage and food that is consumed. Nomads assist with on course marshalling and scoring at all Sunshine and European golf tour events in South Africa.

A National executive committee selected on an annual basis by the various Nomad club committees around the country runs SA Nomads. The committee system works on continuity and is run in a very professional business-like manner.

 Nomads Australia

We inaugurated our Nomad Golf Club of Australia in December of 2003 at the AGM, and have prepared a constitution based on the South African and New Zealand Nomad formula. We will run our club on the tried and tested basis of the SA clubs with a couple of slight differences. The main difference at this stage is not wearing jackets, ties and Nomads insignia after the game at prize giving. This may come into play to be in keeping with tradition if we start participating in Nomads competitions out of this country.

The committee comprises the following: Captain, Vice-Captain, Junior Vice Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, Handicapper, Venue Co-ordinator, Business Development Co-ordinator and a Past Captain. The committee meets once a month to run, administer and grow the club.

The Vice-captain is responsible for nominating the charity we wish to give monies to. This is done with the sanction of the members and committee and the monies are donated on Gold Cup day, which is the December game.

The AGM is also held on this day with the election of the new Vice-Captain. The out going Vice-captain succeeds the Captain who in turn takes up the Past Captain’s role on the committee to maintain continuity for a one-year period.

Update

Nomads Australia ”potted“ History.

The idea to start  a Nomads representation in Australia was formed and actioned around a BBQ Wayne Richardson, Johan Landsberg and Mark Thompson decided that the Nomads concept would be well received in Australia and explored the level of interest from within their local community.

The very first “fly the flag” game was held at Gordon Golf club in Sydney hosting 19 players. The interest in the Nomad format, uniforms and discipline, rocketed membership and 8 months later Nomads Australia was inaugurated with 60 founder members.

It was soon evident that the organisation was going to grow and expand to other regions and the original club was renamed Nomads Sydney North. A National committee was elected to manage the organisations affairs and to look after the development of the organisation in Australia.

The first Charity day was held a couple of months later starting the tradition that has been very successfully implemented by a succession of Vice Captains. Nomads Sydney North have collected and distributed to charities over $100 000 and junior golf through the Jack Newton Golf Foundation has benefitted 2 budding golfers per year. This contribution is in the form of a scholarship that is awarded to a young player on his golfing merit and his attitude towards the game and benevolence.

Peter Thomson  was approached to consider the role as Patron of the Australian organisation which he accepted.

Brisbane Nomads was started by Wayne Richardson who had relocated to Queensland and Paul Mcilroy an ex Gauteng Nomad from South Africa. Similar to the experience in Sydney the popularity of the Nomads club exceeded all expectations. The Brisbane Club was inaugurated and in less than six month membership reached the 80 mark.

The Inaugural Australian National Tournament is planned for the weekend of the 23rd to 25th of October 2009.
